Mother’s Day appreciation for Mom and Mother Earth!

Happy Mother’s Day! It’s my mom I have to thank for being here and while it certainly can’t even begin to repay her for everything she has done for me, it feels only right to dedicate today’s post to this absolute angel on Earth!

Pep talk! Please remember there is softness in the world

Just a gentle reminder tonight:

There is still softness in the world. There are still people who love and who want peace and who care. We have golden light and a beautiful moon and skies that change color. Flowers are sprouting up from the earth like they’re singing to the sky. We still have sunshine and bird songs and a great big planet to stand on as we hurdle through space.

The experience of being at this world can be beautiful and terrible and everywhere in between. There is a full spectrum from the best to the worst of things available here. Please choose softness and sweetness and love when possible. We have enough harshness all around us. May we find solace in appreciating the parts of our world worth celebrating. Though we cannot come together physically, we can unite in gratitude for each other and the world that we inhabit. We are so lucky to have each other, we are lucky to be here, and we have the strength to hold out hope for a more deeply interconnected future with ourselves, each other, and our planet.

I say all this because I know sometimes it is easy to forget! We all experience concern for the future, but please don’t let that rob you of the present. Focusing on what we want to see in the world will help us collectively manifest a happier reality. I believe in you, I believe in me, and I believe in the world, no matter what.

the moon tarot card

Tarot Tuesday on a Thursday because time is an illusion and HAVE YOU NOTICED THE MOON LATELY???

Wow, y’all really let me get away with skipping Tarot Tuesday, huh? I’ll admit, in the absence of a regular routine, my concept of time has been completely distorted! It feels like just yesterday we were talking about the Hanged Man, but that was over a week ago! Anyway, welcome back to your Tarot Tuesday, on a Thursday.

Last night’s epic full moon in Scorpio really captured my full attention! Sometimes I don’t feel much during the buildup towards the full moon, but throughout the week I became increasingly aware of a palpable intensity in the air. Turns out I wasn’t alone; several friends have reached out to me describing a particular feeling of restlessness, passionate energy, and drive to DO something! So it sounds like the perfect time to discuss one of my favorite cards, THE MOON!

all about air plants

All about air plants: how to care for different varieties, why they’re so awesome, and more!

Ahhh, air plants! These funky little guys, also known as Tillandsia, absorb water and nutrients from tiny crystalline trichomes on their leaves, never requiring the fuss of pots or soil! Although they have gained a reputation for being an “easy” beginner plant, after careful research I learned they do require a bit of specialized care. Different air plants have different personalities and preferences! Determined to be the best plant parent I can be, I have searched the Internet far and wide for information on how to care for all the different varieties of air plants. Now that I have been successfully caring for (and steadily growing my collection) of air plants for over a year, I feel confident that the knowledge I have acquired is worth sharing. Now you too can crack the code of these magical and mysterious life forms!

cold brew coffee spell

A beginner’s guide to making cold brew coffee… and turning it into a spell for energy and vitality!

Are you tired of me trying to guess what day it is yet? Word off the street is, it’s somewhere near the beginning of the week… time to grab a cuppa caffeination and uh, stay right where you are, I guess?

Are you missing your old routine? Are you missing the little tidbits of normalcy that used to seem trivial, but now seem like a lifeline attached to reality as we knew it? For example, the casual coffee run. I’m even missing getting together with a friend to line up for twenty minutes for boujee coffees that we undoubtedly paid too much for. (Insert a comment about millennials and their priorities here.) In the absence of the daily rituals that fleshed out our former routines and brought a sense of comforting reliability to our world, I would like to suggest the creative invention of something new to temporarily take its place.

Sadly, a lot of coffeeshops are currently closed, and many of us are being forced to reconsider how we are allocating our resources. (And unfortunately those $7 lattes may not necessarily fit into the most sensible daily budget.) But good coffee is good coffee, man. Those cravings are not going to go away. With a little extra time on your hands, why not learn to make your own bomb ass cold brew? You can easily make boujee coffee your way AND save a bunch of money doing so. Better yet, because everything is better with a little magic, you can infuse your custom-crafted libation with an enchantment for an extra kick.

venus

Venus over the sea

Just a little story tonight…

I always admired the super bright “star” that is first to appear over the western horizon… until I quite recently learned it was not a star at all – it’s Venus! I couldn’t help but feel a bit of a thrill as I realized that from my point of view, she hovers above the ocean, and even shines through my west-facing window. (My Venus is in Pisces – it feels oh so right!)

Moving towards the May 7th full moon in Scorpio, there is intensity building in the air. The energy of Venus glistening in our sky is passionate, fiery, and driven by love. If you are feeling a lot right now, it is certainly appropriate. Now is the time to connect with the passionate loving energy inside of us so that it may guide us onward. We can feel all kinds of things, but as cheesy as it may sound, the most important is love. Keep on shining your light to the world in any way you can, Venus reminds us. That is what you came here for!

selenite

Sunday Night Selenite

Ahh, another late evening blurring into early morning. Is anyone else creeping closer and closer to nocturnal hours these days? My natural sleep schedule seems to prefer 3am to 12pm as hibernation time, though I try to set my alarm for 11:11am as it makes me feel lucky. As I ponder whether to attempt to go to sleep soon, I find myself feeling drawn to hold a piece of selenite. I think this crystal has a Sunday night message for us all, as it can be particularly helpful during these trying times. Let’s reflect on the magical meaning of selenite!

In honor of How Weird: the origin of how the word “weird” came to be

San Francisco loves its fairs and festivals! My personal favorite among them is How Weird, during which several blocks of the city’s Financial District centered around Howard and 2nd Streets are transformed into a celebration of all things creative, trippy, fun, and weird. Though it normally would have occurred the first weekend in May, it has been postponed like everything else. (The good news is they are having an online livestream version Sunday, May 3rd from 11:11am ’til late!) In its honor, I’d like to share with you one of my favorite fun facts: the origin of the word “weird”!

MAY DAY: celebrating the ancient traditions of Beltane in our new world

I’m not sure there has ever been a more appropriate time in our lifetimes to say this: MAY DAY! MAY DAY! That’s right, 4/20 is officially over (on the calendar, at least). In Irish, Scottish, and pagan tradition, the first day of May is generally celebrated with festivals, frolicking, and bonfire parties. Known as Beltane or May Day, this midway point between the spring equinox and summer solstice looked a little different this year. Given the current need to practice social distancing, we couldn’t exactly do a whole lot of frolicking. (And bonfires are currently banned at the beach.) We might be living in a different time than the revelers of May Days past, but there are other ways to appreciate the turn of the season toward summer.
